Hooray! No more blow drying windows! No more of this unsightly plastic window “insulation” or the double sided tape that you have to scrape off with a knife after the season. Two thumbs up for double-pane windows! Truly, double-pane windows were one of the greatest inventions of the previous century. They helped to save homeowners money on heating and cooling and, therefore, reduced emissions. Talking about green technology.

If you still have single-pane windows in your home (it is hard to find anyone that does), your should seriously consider to upgrade them to double-pane ones.

Here are some of the benefits of double-pane windows:

The new double-pane windows are energy efficient. They help to insulate the house. They are graded based on their efficiency (look for Energy Star seal). The higher the number – the more efficient the window. With this type of windows you can open your curtains in the winter and let the sun in to warm up the room. There is no worries about cold air coming in.

They block street noise. If you live near a highway, school, or a busy shopping area, replacing your single-pane windows with double-pane ones will make a big difference in noise reduction. You may even sleep better without all that noise.

The newest double-pane windows have a UV protection film applied to protect you and your home from sun damage. You can open your curtains wide and not to worry about your expensive painting fading in the sun.

The new window frames are decorative and very easy to clean. Usually made of vinyl, they do not get as cold as aluminum frames.

Prices of double sided windows vary depending on brand and contractor. Do your homework first before calling any contractors. Research the windows on line. Go to a home improvement store like Home Depot and write down the prices of windows that you are interested in. Then, get at least two quotes from different contractors. Keep in mind that energy efficient windows are eligible for $1500.00 tax credit. It is always best to replace all of the windows at once. That's when you reap the most benefits of replacing them. But, if you can't afford to do that, try to replace one room at a time, starting with the area where your thermostat is. It may still lower your energy bill.

Updating windows will make a big difference in your home. It will increase your comfort of living, lower your utility bills and make a positive impact on the environment. Double-pane windows are definitely worth the expense.
