Spirituality. It is my special place. It is closer and more intimate than my relationship with my wife. Spirit is as close as my breath. As a matter of fact, the word in Greek and Hebrew means breath. Even in English, we talk about inspiration and respiration as breathing. For me, my spirituality incorporates my Christian faith. However, I have known many people who are not religious, who are very spiritual.
I feel closest to my spiritual self and to God when I am in nature. (Is it any wonder that God spoke to Moses on the mountain? or that Jesus went into the wilderness before beginning his ministry?) There are other biblical examples, but I will end there.
I feel the closest when I see some coincidence that cannot be explained away. Or when I am in nature and realize that I am part of the beauty I see around me. Or when I see the magnificence of creation and realize the genius of the Creator.
Or when I am at church and something touches me and I wipe away the tears as I realize how loved I am. Or when I help lead a worship service and know that God has used me to reach God's children.
Of course, writing is very spiritual to me, but is that not true for everyone who "inhales Helium"?
Spirituality also helps me realize that I am connected to every other person who calls this world home or who ever has. Did you ever think that the same water that passed through Moses' body, through Jesus' body, George Washington's body, now passes through ours? We breathed the same air, ate food cultivated from the same earth. And we prayed to the same God, had the same dreams and experienced love in the same way. We have much more in common with the person who is the polar opposite of us than we are separated from them. This includes those whom we consider our enemies, which I consider a misnomer.
If all of us would remember our spiritual base, I think that it would go a long way towards bringing peace on earth. I hope you find peace and your spiritual nature.
