Over 100,000 people dead; millions left homeless; hundreds of thousands injured; buildings collapsed; government services gone; seaport and airport damaged; utilities, water, sewer, power, damaged. How can the rest of the world come to the aid of Haiti during this relief and recovery from the most recent catastrophic earthquake? What goods are best donated to address the many dire needs of the people? These questions people around the world are asking in order to help those who cannot help themselves. Here are a few suggestions to consider.
Cash:
The most important resource needed at this time is cash. Money is the one resource needed in order to fund the various and sundry agencies dispatched to bring aid and relief. Money will buy food, clothing, and medical supplies. Money funds transportation needs to get people and equipment into the earthquake zone. Money is needed to purchase basic needs for the victims as well as supplies needed to support the rescue teams. Money is needed now for the immediate needs and money will be needed for the long term projects of rebuilding the country. Financial resources are the number one need and will be for the foreseeable future. The American Red Cross is one agency in need of your donations.
Personal hygiene products:
Most houses are damaged to the point they are no longer safe to live in. People are living in make shift shelters or no shelters at all. Sanitary facilities are practically non-existent. There is a great need for personal hygiene products. Put together a small package the size of a shoebox. Fill it with toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, soap, cotton swabs, anti bacteria hand cleanser, band aids, comb, brush and the like. These products we take for granted are things that could bring much relief to the people.
Small gift packages for kids:
The most vulnerable victims are the small children. They have been ripped away from everything that has been normal for them. Many are now orphans. A small gift box of crayons, coloring books, stuffed animals, and small toys may be just the thing to brighten the day for a child who lost everything. Youth groups, churches, synagogues, schools, and scout organizations can all take part in putting together these packages for the needy.
Blankets:
With the primary housing being tents and such, blankets are needed to bring warmth and comfort. Even though Haiti is in a very warm climate, it is still important to have blankets when you no longer have a solid roof over your head.
