The ways people choose to view things can really distort the truth, just because you don't believe in something doesn't mean the truth isn't out there, it doesn't mean that everyone can be right because it's all about personal opinion. Who made that up anyway? Just because you don't believe in gravity doesn't mean it's not there, just because you don't believe in global warming doesn't mean it's not there, just because you don't believe in God doesn't mean he's not there. There are absolutes and we choose to ignore them.
We would rather feel in control of our lives then to trust a God we cannot see to guide us in life. If anything we are afraid to hand ourselves over, we feel vulnerable and scared, we just don't trust God or the idea of having one. But we can't do it on our own, we as humans have a habit of severely messing things up, what makes us think we are capable of running our own lives successfully. We do not possess the mind of God we can't think, see or even comprehend how big he is and how powerful he can be if only we let him in.
He is not made up out of fear for the unknown; he wasn't made so we can push aside our responsibilities on God. God takes away fear and we are still 100% responsible for our own actions. He is a just as well as merciful, he will punish us, but he will also help us fix our lives when we've messed them up.
I can understand how you can be afraid of God, he is powerful, and he is something we don't know on our own. He gets to our heart and shows us our greatest fears and greatest sins. It's a scary thing to face yourself and all the horrors of your life. With belief comes change as well, it is useless to believe in something and never do anything about it. The change in your life and how you live it will feel unnatural and strange which may bring about feelings of fear and insecurity. As humans we often fear what we don't know or understand .The fear of rejection and the fear of doubt are inevitable when you choose a way to believe. Really for any belief you will have some degree of fear, not everyone believes the same way you do, and not everyone knows how to deal with that.
