There is a special bond that siblings share no matter what sex they are. There is a difference in the way they bond though. Same sex siblings probably have a somewhat closer relationship than opposite sex siblings. When you have two sisters or two brothers, they can talk more openly about certain things than they would if their sibling was the opposite sex. Two boys are more likely to enjoy sports together than a brother sister team. Two sisters would enjoy shopping together more than a brother and sister.
There are other issues involved as well though. Brothers, no matter if they are younger or older, are very protective of their sisters. This can cause some tension along the way. The sister takes it that the brother is trying to control her life. In a way, he is. He doesn't want to see his sister hurt, so he does what he can to stop it before it happens.
Two boys or two girls can talk to each other about sex or any other subject. That isn't true with opposite sex siblings. These subjects are off limits between opposite sex siblings. Same sex siblings just have a better chance of bonding and therefore can often be much closer than opposite sex siblings.
Opposite sex siblings can be very close. They protect each other and they love each other very much. The closeness is a different sort though. You have each other and neither party would ever let someone else hurt the other one. There are extremely close opposite sex siblings. There are no ground rules for this. It depends on the family and on the siblings personalities as well. Same sex siblings will often cling to each other in times of trouble. They will do some things together but there are still things that they won't ever talk about.
Same sex siblings have a closeness that cannot be compared to anything else. They naturally have more things in common and will stick together for this reason alone. It isn't about the closeness of simply loving each other. It is also about enjoying the company of the other one. That isn't always possible with opposite sex siblings.
All siblings are close. At least that is the way it should be. Same sex siblings are just able to share more things together and therefore find a closer bond because of those activities. In any case, siblings are siblings. No matter what sex, there will be sibling rivalry. No matter what, they will always have each others back.
