What (and what not) to wear with cowboy boots

Every girl should have a pair of cowboy boots in their wardrobe. If you don’t, now’s the time to grab some. But if you’re wondering how to wear your vintage leather boots, here’s some advice to make sure you look feminine and fashionable.

Cowboy boots aren’t just for the rodeo and if you know a thing or two about fashion then you’ll probably have already invested in a pair. But now you need to know what outfits to team up with your latest footwear addition and what combinations should be avoided at all costs.

Denim is of course a fashion staple and one that works perfectly with cowboy boots. Jeans are an obvious choice to team with your boots and you can choose to wear your jeans over you boots or tucked inside to show them off in their full glory. If you’re tucking your jeans in then a tight leg jean works best to avoid unsightly ruffles and creases and makes it easier to tuck inside your boot. If you’re wearing jeans over your boots, then a bootcut fit is an obvious choice. From dark denims, to vintage washouts, the combination is jeans and cowboy boots is one where it’s nigh on impossible to go wrong.

If you want to combine your cowboy boots with denim in a more girly way, then a short denim skirt will look cute and bang on trend. Try an A line mini in a dark denim with a little sweater for a cute preppy look that is comfortable but still oozes fashion but if you’re showing off your legs, make sure to team you denim skirt with a more subtle top to avoid looking too tarty.

Ditsy tea dresses are the latest look to take the fashion world by storm and you can pick up your own unique dress from a thrift shop to help you to achieve a truly vintage look. Whilst cute floral dresses will give you a girly feminine look, combining them with cowboy boots will give your look an added edge and bring your 50s inspired dress bang up to date. Try adding a chunky leather belt to compliment your boots and a boyfriend style cardigan and you’ll have an outfit straight off the pages of the latest celebrity magazines at a fraction of the designer cost.

Of course, whilst your cowboy boots may seem like the ultimate in versatility, it’s important to remember that they won’t compliment every outfit. Casual sportswear and smart formal attire do not mix well with even the most divine of cowboy boots and are combinations that should be left to the brave and stupid. Similarly, checked shirts, lashings of denim and boots may work for the real cowboys, but are a definite faux pas in the fashion world. Shorts are a bit hit and miss. If you have the legs then it’s certainly a combination worth attempting, but you need to put your outfit together to avoid looking like your on your way to a Dukes of Hazard fancy dress party.

Ultimately, cowboy boots are a classic fashion staple that are comfortable to wear and can bring an added edginess to your outfit. Don’t be shy to mix and match them with other items and be adventurous. Cowboy boots weren’t just made for cowboys after all so it’s time for us girls to show them that these boots were made for fashion.
