Poetry: Growing old

by Carmen Henesy

Created on: January 23, 2010   Last Updated: January 24, 2010

I gaze at my bathroom mirror,
And looking back at me,
Are the telltale signs of wrinkles,
And gray hair their company.

My knees ache when it’s rainy,
And I toss and turn at night,
And clothes that used to fit me,
Have become a little tight!

I may be a bit forgetful,
That’s what my children say,
But I don’t think it’s quite as bad,
As the stories they portray!

I can’t really howl in laughter,
Or my Depends will overflow,
Heck, that can even happen,
When I give my nose a blow!

I used to dance the night away,
But I can’t do that at all,
I’m lucky to manage one pirouette,
Without leaning on a wall.

I sag a bit and need a lift,
But I can’t afford those fees,
Plastic surgeons are overpriced,
Their ads are such a tease!

I’ll just fade into the sunset,
With my other older friends,
We’ll laugh and toast each other,
Until our lifelong journey ends.
