Poetry: Comfort

by Nadine Angela-Louise Jones

Created on: January 23, 2010

I’m at peace with you,

No turmoil,

I can sink into you and sleep beside you,

I am calm and still,

You are like a blanket that covers me,

And it’s so strange to no longer have hurricanes,

To have sunny skies and vast meadows instead,

I’m walking on soft ground,

Not knowing where I’m going,

You knock me for six,

I’m learning all over again,

Walking on new ground,

But I am totally safe doing it,

Not afraid,

Not panicked,

At peace,

I have small worries but they are mostly dulled by your reassurance.

For someone with so little conviction of self you are unmovable when it comes to me,

So sure,

The way you’re willingly tie yourself to me scares me,

Surprises me,

But I am willing to get used to it,

Willing to be valued however unnerving,

It feels like paper I am willing not to crumble or break apart,

Everything feels fragile despite the fullness of it,

I’m waiting for the break,

There’s always been something that breaks,

But I’m hoping that it won’t,

Half believing that it won’t.

This strange new land,

Placed in caring hands,

I can’t wait until you come home and hold me,

Can’t wait for the solid reassurance and care,

The safety you give me.
