Emer’s Story
Naked, except for a small grey cloak, she walked on a bantam path through the old and twisted forest. A thick canopy of leaves blocked the sunlight and any warmth from penetrating through to the hard, frozen earth below. On this ice-covered land she walked, her figure tall and lithe with flowing, midnight hair hanging to a thin waist. She marked a stark contrast to the immortal enchantment of the colossal trees. A gusty wind blew in the high treetops, causing icy limbs to clink against frozen, a song as delicate and lonely as wind chimes.
A small, flaxen squirrel scampered in front of the pale, young woman and stood up on skinny hind legs, twitching its whiskered nose. She scooped it up with delicately long, bony fingers.
“Well, hello there little creature,” spoke she in her lilting, singsong voice.
It only chirruped merrily, swishing its tail.
“What is it that you do here alone so far from your family? Poor, lost child…so full of love..” Ceasing to stroke its soft fur, she turned over the white puffball and stroked its pink belly as it began to struggle, as it realized what was soon to ensue.
“Shhhh....small one. There is no need to fear.” She traced a circle around the position of its heart with a long, ivory fingernail.
“This won’t hurt for long,” she grinned, thin lipped. The girl bent down on one knee as her jet black hair fell daintily across one cheek. With her nail she poked through the furry flesh and inside traced the circle she had drawn. Two drops of thick, red blood sizzled in the pure snow as she plucked out the still-beating, life-giving muscle. Carefully, she placed the tiny white animal off to one side of the narrow path and covered its body with leaves. She tucked the heart away in a hidden pocket within her cloak, then stood up and resumed her walking.

Purposely straying off the trail, her bare feet made no sound as she wove through the dense tangle of trees. Straight ahead there appeared a small clearing in the form of a perfect ellipse, out of place in the dense wood. Eyeing it warily, she knew this was her destination. She pursed crimson, lush lips and kneeled down only one small step from the unearthly clearing, not yet ready to abide inside.
The strange girl’s frame jerked suddenly as a horrendous ‘Boom’
