Roly Poly’s Don’t Get Wings
Chapter 1
The swing suddenly lurched as the weight was removed. The little girl ran hoping to hide before her step-father saw her. Shivering under the juniper bush she had escaped – this time. At ten years old though, she knew it was only a deferment. He would find her; maybe not today, or tomorrow; but he would and she’d have to be a good girl. She sobbed quietly until she heard her mother calling her name; “Susan Ann! Where are you?” Susie could hear the panic in her mother’s voice. She loved her mom and never wanted to make her sad, so jumping up and running as fast as she could she responded, “Here I am, mommy; I was right here. I’m ok.” The mother grabbed her daughter by the arm and sternly told her never to stay out so late; she must be home and inside by 4:00 no later. Throwing her arms around her mother, she promised to never worry her again. Mother returned her oldest daughter’s hug and kissed her cheek. “Now hurry up and get ready for supper. You’re father is home and wants dinner right now.” Susie did as she was told – she surely did not want to anger her stepfather or get his attention.
Dinner passed uneventfully, and Susie and her younger sister Kathy cleared the table and started in on the dishes. As usual the close sisters whispered and giggled as they washed the plates then the glasses and silverware. Finally on the pots and pans, they fell quiet; both wanting nothing more than this task to be over, elated that they would be done in time to watch the Andy Griffith show. Kathy had such a crush on that cute little Opie. She could watch episode after episode. That is until the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show; then it was all about Ringo for Susie and Paul for Kathy; ahh; now they were cute!
Getting ready for bed, giggling again over the shows they had seen on TV, the girls suddenly fell silent as their step-father slammed his fist on their door and yelled “Quiet! No more talking! If I hear one more sound, I’ll slap your asses so hard they’ll bleed!” Believing him, the girls fell into a fearful silence; not moving until they fell asleep.
