Mosh pit culture

Moshing is not part of the "culture" per se. Moshing is counter cultural as is the whole heavy metal scene. However, the mosh pit does belong to the sub culture that has been spawned by metal. If you've gone to a metal concert, and have not moshed, then you haven't been a part of the concert, you might as well have not gone. Well, that might be pushing it a little, but the mosh pit is a huge part of metal shows.
It's also quite interesting to point out how the mosh pit changes depending on the show you go to. I saw Gwar last summer and it was a lot of 30 year old guys, and me, moshing around quite violently. Then, there's concerts like Superjoint Ritual where a much younger crowd (wearing Pantera t-shirts) gets involved and they are even crazier and bloodier than the Gwar pits, despite the blood spewing off the stage (haha).
Everyone who goes to metal shows is part of the mosh pit whether you are ineffectively avoiding getting caught in the maelstrom or getting dirty with the dirtiest of dudes. Thus, moshing is part of A culture, but not part of mainstream society. Which is a good thing.
