Short stories: A Halloween trick gone wrong

by Volecia Plafcan

Created on: January 22, 2010

Of course, the weather was cool and crisp.  Some might say it was football weather.  Some would say it  Halloween.  Leaves fell to the ground in graceful bunches of different colors to the ground.  The sky, was blue, blue but, slowly fading to dark.  Trees were slowly losing their covers and turning bare.

Excited children, putting on their costumes for trick or treating, or already out for treats, could be heard about the neighborhood, squealing and shouting.  Adults could be heard telling them not to do this or to thank the lady or man for the treat.

Nan hastened down the sidewalk to her house.  She was fifteen but, she and her friends still had fun at Halloween.  They didn't trick or treat anymore since they were older now, but, still had fun at school at the Halloween Festival or the mall.  But, this year they had a car.  Oh, boy!  They wouldn't have to walk all over the place and be too worn out to have fun.

Carol's dad had generously given her a brand new one for her birthday this month.  She was allowed to drive it during the day but nights were forbidden 'til tonight.  This night would surely prove if Carol could manage her car without incident or accident.

"Mom! I'm home!"  Nan called as she unintentionally slammed the front door and strode on up to her room.  She flung her backpack on her bed and began texting Carol on her cell phone.

C U AT 7 the message read.  She slid the phone in her jeans confident Carol had already texted back  OK.

"Hi, hon!"  Her mother called back cheerfully.  Addy Robson chose to stay home rather than work so she could be home when the children came in from school.  They were financially comfortable, maybe a little more than that, but, she chose not to work.

Nan dug in her closet for her costume.  It was a homemade one, with the help of her mother it really made her look like Cat Woman, however much her mother resented her wearing it out in public.  Nan assured her she would wear the cape with it so that pacified her mom somewhat.

Carol picked Nan up at seven on the dot.  After showing off her Lara Kroft costume Carol invited Nan's mom and dad out to see her car.  After hearing a lot of ooh's and ahh's and plenty of 'be carefuls', from the parents, the girls were off to pick up Betty and Amy.

"Okay, girls, what shall we do?"  Carol asked.  "Now that we have the car at night, what are
