Product reviews: Maltesers White Chocolate (Winter Edition)

by S. Graveson

Created on: January 21, 2010

One of the most recognisable sweets on the shops shelves are the chocolate covered balls of malt, other known as Maltesers (should be Malteaser surely?) though recently I saw some “White Maltesers” and decided to try them out. As a big fan of white chocolate and someone who finds Maltesers rather nice “if in the mood for them” the combination of the two at the time should, in theory, be a brilliant master stroke by Mars. Whilst not a huge fan of Mars' normal milk chocolate the few times Mars use white chocolate they seem to just hit the spot, in fact that's almost the universal effect of white chocolate. To stand out on the shelf next to the original Maltesers these come in a mainly white packet with a red part in the centre, the images on the front of Maltersers are again white and it looks familiar but different to the original packets. The snack sized packs are 35g and are priced around the 50-60p a bag range which is slightly over priced considering the size of the bags.

Inside the bag it contains quite a lot of balls of white chocolate similar in shape and size to the original milk chocolate Maltesers. The chocolate coat is smooth but a little bit sticky on the outside as though it's been sweating a little bit in the packet, yet it glistens under the light in the room which makes it look a little bit prettier. When popped in the mouth it must remembered there is 2 completely separate ways to eat Maltesers the first is the softly softly approach of sucking the chocolate off the malt ball and the second is the crunching of the sweet in the teeth...the violent teenage boy way, if you will. So first lets look at the sucking method which tests the taste of the chocolate, and as expected the white chocolate is delicious and delightful, the milky taste of it is sublime in the mouth and incredibly morish. The malt centre melts in your mouth in a lovely smooth and soft tasting way. So on to the violent method which sees the malt crashing against the sides of your mouth in a fantastically sweet and gorgeously great tasting way. Overall they seem to actually improve both methods of eating a Maltesers due to the taste of white chocolate.

Nutritional Information (per 100g)

8.3g Protein
63.6g Carbohydrate

The product contains Milk, Barley Malt extract, 3 Numbers (raising Agents E341, E500 and E501), Soya and Whey Powder.

Overall they actually seem to be an improvement on the original Maltesers which is funny as it would almost certainly not be expected to be a success in fact “White Maltesers” just “shouldn't work” (as some people have said) yet if you try them, they really do. Though incredibly high in Energy, Fat and Carbs they are good for you in regards of high Proteins so they may just be a one off snack rather than a regular thing despite the fact they do taste amazing.
