One word that puts all business owners in a cold sweat is failure. Of course business owners know that failure is not an easy one step process. Its a long, drawn out and painful process. And its a good thing that it is so hard. If not more people would be willing to give up before all of their resources are gone. Being able to use these resources are what separates the failed businesses from the successful ones. The interesting thing though is that we often need the clarity gleaned from failure to recognize the steps we should or could have taken the first time around to succeed.
As a business is going through the tortuous steps that lead to failure, there are many places along the way where problems could have been remedied if we had set ourselves up right to begin with. At the start of every business owners decide where assetts are going to be allocated. We all want to put maximum effort toward growth or expansion, but with the clarity of hind sight we can see the choices that led to our failure . On the flip side however, we can find ourselves so scared of that dreaded failure that we don't put ourselves out there enough. The experience to tell the difference in the two situations unfortunately usually comes from trial and error. And often that error can lead to ultimate failure in that initial business.
However, that does not mean that a person should feel beaten or incompetent. Often, market conditions change into something well beyond our control or predictions. Failure is not an inevitable outcome but its also not an end of the world outcome either. In failure there are many lessons to be learned, that we can take into a second business or third business. The important thing is to learn something. If we make the same mistakes all over again then we are doomed to fail all over again. Make lists of the turning points along the way that you know had an unfortunate impact on your success. These are the choices that need to be reconsidered for your future endeavors. Most importantly do not be afraid to try again. Giving up is the ultimate failure, and that's not the outcome anyone wants.
