Working on a happy balance while dating

by Lyn Michaud

Created on: January 21, 2010

Getting to know someone is exciting and scary at the same time. Each person's expectations may differ though both are looking for the security of a longterm relationship. Dating provides freedom to explore possibilities. A person learns to balance being an individual with being a partner. And the right person understands, supports and respects an individual sense of self. Whether you are 18, 41 or 65, consider these techniques for finding a happy balance for dating regardless of priorities based on personal experiences, expectations and responsibilities.

 Health

To be a good partner maintain your healthy habits whether you are single, exclusively dating or in a long-term relationship. Eat right, get plenty of sleep, exercise and maintain a healthy body weight. Health is the first step in being positive and will make the dating experience more enjoyable.

 Economics

Dating can become expensive when eating out and attending events is involved. Be reasonable. Can you afford to go out often? Even if you do have the money, balance expense and luxury with free or low-cost activities. Go for a walk in the park, toss a Frisbee, attend public lectures, have a picnic lunch, go skating or share any of the hobbies or sports you currently enjoy. Focus on the future and stick to your budgets.

 Work and Time Management

Career success might feel intrusive to dating and chores become drudgery. Be flexible when planning dates, if you have just a few hours each week for dating, plan to use that time as quality time even if the two of you agree to multi-task. Some couples choose to do laundry together, shop for groceries together, study together or do creative things together like painting a mural or planting a garden together. The important thing is spending time together, talking and sharing. Remember your ability to focus on your job and still make time for someone special are great skills for creating lasting relationships.

 Friends and family

Other family members will still expect to spend time with you. Decide how much time you intend to give each and be honest. Institute a friends night, one day when you both will enjoy time with others separate from the relationship. Dating can be tricky if you have children. Your free time is probably more limited and you need to protect your child(ren) while still meeting your needs. Don't introduce casual dates or have sleepovers unless you are serious about the relationship.
