A guide to St. Patrick's Day in Norfolk, Virginia

Norfolk, VA holds their 43rd Saint Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 13, 2010. The St. Paddy’s Day parade is hosted by the Father Robert B. Kealey Council #3548 of the Knights of Columbus. This is a wonderful community event of Irish pride honoring St. Patrick.

The 2010 parade marches and drums through the streets of Norfolk, Virginia starting at 10:00 AM. Floats, marching bands, entertainers and government officials will cruise the streets of Norfolk displaying banners, Irish colors and Irish liveliness. Entertainers will please the crowds with their Irish hardiness.

As the Norfolk parade ends, the St. Patrick’s Day party begins. The Columbian Club of Ocean View hosts the St. Patrick’s Day celebration and festivities at 12:30 PM. The gala continues until 4:00 PM. The live music of the Craig Woolard Band and Hot Cakes will entertain you and help you get your St. Patrick’s Day pace pumping. This Irish holiday event is free and open to the public.

The parade route begins at Northside Middle School on Granby Street (460) and continues toward Tidewater (168), crosses over Tidewater and continues to A View Avenue. At A View Avenue the parade turns left and continues to First View Street and heads back toward Tidewater. The party starts at Government Ave and First View Street on the Knights of Columbus lot.

The 2010 Grand Marshall of the Norfolk parade will be Norfolk, VA’s Vice Mayor, Anthony Burfoot. Vice Mayor Burfoot was educated in Norfolk’s public school system, graduating from Lake Taylor High School. Burfoot obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master’s Degree at Virginia State University.

In addition to the St. Patrick’s Day parade and party, Norfolk holds an Emerald Ball on March 6, 2010, 6:30 PM - midnight. The Emerald Ball is a dinner and dance held to honor the Grand Marshall and Princess Pat of the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Hot Cakes will provide live entertainment for this gala. Tickets are $25.00.
