Wow. Was this election wild or what? So much was at stake for the democrats, republicans and especially President Obama. At some point it felt as if the President and democrats were to be unstoppable for some while and were to solely dictate as to what direction United States was to move forward.
Based on this election, I think it is safe to say that it was too much too fast and many got ahead of themselves. I wonder what Nancy Pelosi is doing right now?
The outcome obviously is not good for Democrats and therefore their agenda, which of course includes health care overhaul. So the quick and simple answer to the question: "Does the election of Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown spell the end of health-care reform?", is Yes it is.
However, I do not believe it is the end to the health care overhaul altogether. It is the likely end to the currently proposed form of the overhaul. Scott Brown in his victory speech suggested that he does not want the conversation about the health care to end.
He wants it to proceed and end up in the way that would benefit all parties involved. I am inclined to think that this is exactly what he will do for number of reasons.
However the number one reason, is the fact that he is now the star of the GOP and is likely to be groomed to be the next Presidential candidate. So it is very important for him not to make any mistakes and republicans most likely realize that.
There was a pollster discussing the topic of health care reform on CNBC the other day. What he suggested was that depending on how you pose a question, you are likely to get a certain answer. As an example, if the question is along the lines of 'do you think Obama's health care plan is the right way forward?' some may say no.
However if you ask whether the health care reform is needed in America, the likely answer from the same people will be yes. I think this is something that republicans and Scott Brown understand. That is the reason why the health care reform debate will continue, but I am doubtful it will be passed in the current form.
So tighten your sit belts, it will get rocky. This is not the end of the ‘great debate’ and the probably one of the ‘greatest political games’ we have seen in the long time. President Obama cannot make a full stop now as it will be the end of his career and he knows that.
On the flip note, President Obama is already trying to appeal to American citizens (again) by signing an executive order/memorandum, where he wants to put a stop to awarding government contracts to companies which owe back taxes. Apparently there is about $5 billion in unpaid taxes from such companies.
I wish this is where President Obama started on his way to changing the health care system in US as waste and fraud is exactly what is makes health care so unaffordable to many Americans.
