It is absolutely worth the expense to hire a professional painter. But first, lets dispel the myth that it is expensive to hire a painter. Professional painting crews are among the most reasonably priced of all the service trades. So after doing a normal search for the best company at the most competitive price, I feel you will be pleasantly surprised at the price. If you try to take on a job yourself that may be too much for you, the potential costs may be more than the painter would have charged you. Lets talk about doing the job yourself. I'm not sure that most people realize how much work is actually involved.
First of all, I should clarify a couple of things. If you are only planning on painting one wall or a single piece of trim, just do it yourself. You don't need a painter for that. If you are planning to have a big paint job but don't really care what it looks like, you may not need a painter. A professional painter will only become a good deal if the potential customer cares what the finished product will look like. The tremendous amount of work that goes into a good paint job to separate it from a bad paint job is often over-looked by those who claim that paying for a professional painter is to expensive. Areal painter will go through all the trim work setting nails, caulking joints, puttying nail holes, sanding the surface and preparing the surface with a primer. A novice painter either skips these steps or only half does them because unless you do this kind of work everyday, the sheer scope of the job will be overwhelming. These are the things that adds value to a job. The wall surface is also given much attention by a painter. The sheetrock must have an even surface. This often means that painters turn into drywallers to get the surface right. The walls have to be primed and sanded and then painted again. A great painter will make sure that the house is free from dust and debris or it will end up in the paint, another step over looked by beginners.
Maybe the two biggest difference that makes it make sense to hire a painter are speed and cleanliness. A professional crew would run circles around a novice crew ten times their size. Also, painting is a messy job. If you have valuables around, you will want to use a painter who is used to working with paint.
