Many people dream of working at home. They picture themselves waking up late, having a leisurely breakfast, and then doing some work in their pajamas. They also visualize themselves dropping off their dry cleaning, stopping to chat with neighbors, and hitting the gym whenever they want to. These notions are just fantasies. Working at home requires the same discipline and attention that one would take in the workplace. After all, time is money.
The first thing any home worker should do is set a schedule. This includes waking up at a proper time, every work day, and setting appropriate breaks. You’ll need to harness your inner boss here and not allow yourself to get into the habit of waking up late or taking extra breaks.
Dressing properly is another important step. While the appeal of wearing a nightgown or robe around the house may seem comforting, it shouldn’t be done. Instead, dress professionally like you would at the office. This not only puts you in a “working mindset,” but it also leaves you ready to meet with clients and customers on short notice.
Be sure to cut down on any possible distractions. Don’t work in the kitchen or the living room. The proximity of the television and the fridge will make it tempting to take a quick TV break or grab a light snack. If you live with other people, make it clear that you are not to be disturbed during your work hours. The same goes for anyone who drops by or calls unexpectedly. Politely explain to them that you are working and that you’ll get back to them at a later time.
Always keep good inventory of your office supplies. Make sure that you have enough pens, paper, and whatever else you need to complete your work. Nothing can kill the work day more than having to run to the store to buy some toner or envelopes.
Invest in a dedicated phone line for your home office, whether it’s landline or cellular. This is especially important if you live with others. Your work line should not be tied up by chatty daughters or inconsiderate in-laws.
A clean workplace is essential for productivity. A file cabinet keeps papers organized, secure, and off the work desk. Organizers such as pencil holders and CD cabinets keep important items close, but not cluttered. Nearby bookshelves assure that your most needed references and journals are at hand when needed. A supply cabinet will keep all of your tape, pads, and pens off of the desk and in one easy-to-find place.
If you follow all of the tips outlined in this article, you’ll assuredly increase your productivity while working at home.
