February birthday party ideas

February may be the shortest month of the year but that does not mean there is a shortage of great February inspired birthday party themes.  Valentine’s is a traditional February birthday theme, but why not think outside the box?  Many fun events occur during February that can serve as a theme base for any age of birthday party.  A party theme allows the planner to have a point of focus for invitations, decorations, games, food and party favors

* Queen of Hearts party.

For a Valentine’s birthday, choose something a bit different from the typical party filled with red and pink balloon hearts.  Kids may enjoy a Queen of Hearts party inspired by Alice in Wonderland.  Decorate the party area to look like the Queen’s court.  For decorations, game and food ideas, look through an Alice in Wonderland picture book for inspiration.  For teens or adults a Queen of Hearts costume party can be fun with each guest dressing as a favorite character from Alice in Wonderland.  Another variation to this theme for older teens and adults is to have a Queen of Hearts casino party.

* Groundhog’s Day: Think Spring.

Any birthday party that falls on or near February 2 may take theme inspiration from Punxsutawney Phil and Groundhog’s Day.  Legend has it that if Phil the groundhog comes out of his burrow and does not see his shadow, winter is on the way out and we are in for a mild spring.  No matter if the groundhog sees his shadow or not, be optimistic and plan a Think Spring birthday party.  Decorate with flowers like tulips and daffodils.  Other Spring elements may include butterflies, bumblebees and rainbows.  This is a great birthday theme for girls.  For a creative party activity consider purchasing several packets of flower seeds and plain flowerpots.  Have the girls paint and decorate their pot and then plant the seeds for a take-home party favor.

* Winter Olympics theme.

The Winter Olympics usually take place in February during an Olympic year.  For an action-packed birthday party theme perfect for kids, consider an Olympic party.  Plan party games based on various Winter Olympic sports.  For example, Bobsled Balloon Break challenges each child to be the bobsled, racing through a taped off area breaking balloons with their “bobsled bottom.”  If you have a Wii console game and balance board accessory,
