Travel guide to the Calabria region of Italy

Calabria is a region in southern Italy and located in the toe of this wonderful country’s boot. Its unique position between the Tyrrhenian, Ionian and Mediterranean coast makes Calabria the Pearl of the Mediterranean. It is often said Calabria has the most beautiful beaches of Italy. With the crystal blue water and the blue, you can enjoy of every day in this Italian peninsula which many tourists still have to discover.

However, Calabria is well known for its coasts and beaches; the landscape is dominated through mountains and you will find a variety of plants. It is amazing how many cactus plants you find in different places of this beautiful peninsula. Citrus fruit orchards, olive trees, chestnut trees and even oak, pine and fir trees dominate the landscape of Calabria.

Calabria is one of the cheapest places to visit in Italy. You may not find the amazing architecture of Florence; there are still wonderful buildings you can admire. The Cattolica di Stila is a church of byzantine architecture and the most famous building in Calabria. This byzantine church has a surface of only 6m X 6m and has been built by monks in the 10th century. The roof is covered with 5 cupolas and the central one is taller and larger than the others and supported by 4 antique pillars.

Gerace is a jewel in Calabria and sometimes called the Florence of the south. The most important building in this city is the Assunta Cathedral which is built in 1045 and is still the largest one in Calabria. Another important building in this city is the Norman castle of Gerace which stands on a rock.

Capa Colonna is another interesting place to visit in Calabria. It is the most eastern point of Calabria and located 10 kilometers from Crotone on a cape high above sea level. Habitants of Croton have built a sanctuary devoted to the Goddess Hera Lacina. The only standing column which can be seen is all that remains from the temple.

Tropea is a picturesque city on the Tyrrhenian coast and remarkable through the narrow streets in the old center. The atmosphere is comparable with these of Sorrento. The cathedral is undoubtedly the most admired building in this city. It was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style and renovated in Gothic style. Tropea is also a beautiful place where you can walk around the beaches and a perfect place for shopping. From the coast you can view the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation which is built on a rock. Tropea is really a wonderful city which offers attractions
