Divorce in terms of today’s society did not always exist.  In ancient times, the only ground for divorce was if the bride-to-be was found to be dishonorable.  I believe this may still be practiced in middle- eastern countries.  No, I do not believe that divorce is acceptable in the eyes of God or YHWH.  In today’s society, divorce has been manipulated by those who wish to abandon responsibility and promise.

In today’s society, divorce is extremely common.  Several decades ago, if a couple was to become divorced it was highly shunned upon especially for menial reasons that society has allowed.  The rate of divorce and the level of commitment go hand-in-hand.  In America, marriages come and go.  Couples marry for convenience, and they marry on impulse.  -Hence, the common scenario of eloping to Las Vegas to get married.  An example of an ‘impulse’ marriage would be that of my uncle-in-law.  I don’t know the particulars, but one moment they were marrying through the courthouse and the next my grandfather was financing his divorce.

There was a time when divorce was highly frowned upon.  In that time, marriages were made to be kept, not broken.  Promises were remembered and not easily discarded.  The Scriptures shows one reason why a divorce was allowed in Biblical times.  If a man had paid the father the price for his bride (otherwise known as the bride’s price) and found his bride to be impure then the man could scripturally file a divorce of sorts.  In Scriptural times, a man and his soon-to-be bride were married in all aspects except the nature that provides children when a contract was formed between the father and him.   Of course, there were procedures to follow, so that the daughter’s name would become defiled if she were indeed pure.  The usual of checking to see if the bride was impure or not was to check the marriage sheets after they had lain together.  If there was blood on the sheets, then the bride was pure; if not a divorce could scripturally and legally be filed.

Once again divorce had vastly changed in circumstance, but I blame this on the corruption of society’s morals and values.  Divorce was not intended to be an easy solution for those that realized marriage was not for him/her or escape responsibility.  It was originally created as a fair solution of getting cheated out of having a pure virgin for a bride.  No, I firmly believe that divorce is not acceptable in the eyes of God or YHWH.
