I recently heard Dollhouse is going to be cancelled. Okay, well, ... CRAP! Stop cancelling Joss Whedon shows! Despite the fact the plot started out fairly lame, despite the fact the acting is less than stellar for at least half of the cast, and despte the fact the show reminded me of a cross between Charlie's Angels and Fantasy Island - I'm REALLY disappointed!
For those of you who don't watch Dollhouse, the plot is fairly simple. An international organization makes a small fortune selling fantasies, including live "Dolls" (mind controlled indentured humans), to very elite people. The "Dolls" are unfortunate people who come to the Dollhouse to escape jail, escape loss or basically to make a bunch of money and bail themselves out of a pickle. Once in the Dollhouse, scientists use technology to wipe all but the basic brain-function from the Dolls heads, and replace it with generated and catalogued alternate personalities. Further, when reprogrammed, the Dolls can perform intellectual and physical feats at a sometimes super-human level. Between "assignments" the Doll's brain's are wiped, and they revert to a child-like state until their next assignment. Echo, our herione Doll, has uniquely developed the ability to retain memories from all her past assignments. This is cool.
The first season started out fairly lame. The lead male hero was a rogue police officer trying to bring down "the Dollhouse". However, the authorities didn't know, or didn't acknowledge the Dollhouse's existance. But basically, every week a highly disjointed plotline put Echo in the middle of a different storyline. One week she took on the personality of a dead woman, who wanted to make to find out who killed her - and had her personality perserved for just such an occasion apparently. Another week, she became a cult member to try to rescue someone's kid (or wife, I can't remember) from a cult. Often she played the wife, girlfiriend or fantasy lover for rich an lonely men. Okay - so sometimes Dollhouse was a step up from soft porn.
Cheesy at best, I've grown quite attached to some of the plot members. Moreover, the acting seemed to GET BETTER. Also nifty, several cast members hailed from other beloved and gone shows such as: Angel, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica! Woot! It's Helo from BSG, Wash from Firefly, Fred from Angel AND Replacement Buffy
