I find that there are many advantages of having public transport available. The simple reasons include the high cost of fuel for cars as well as the way the rail and metro networks make journey times much shorter. Other reasons include the relatively low price charged on public transport as well as the need to go out and enjoy the fresh air. The way in which public transport is available varies from country to country and from state. Also I would think that the time it takes to travel especially in London is much more advantageous because driving through London incurs a congestion charge as London is zoned into a pay congestion area.
Commuting around London on the metro makes the journey time much more flexible in being able to travel around different towns and places in London as the availability of trains is good in that it is easy to get to different parts of London quite quickly. The costs of using the underground and rail networks make the journey times quite short as well as not so expensive. Using taxis is quite expensive as the taxi is metered with a fare machine, and travelling to destinations on the rail and tube networks are well connected in that it makes the overall cost of travelling seem much better value.
There are disruptions to the London underground service at certain times of the week, though on the whole the London Underground network is very reliable and starts early in the morning which allows tens of thousands of Londoner's to travel to work and allows other travellers to access London very easily. The public transport availability increases accessibility for a number of people. Those people working in the cities and who live in the suburbs have two options to either travel through the public transport or to drive. There is more traffic congestion in the major cities and people have to pay congestion charges to use their cars in the cities. Then there are those people who can not afford to run and drive a car. The public transport gives people chances to find jobs outside the towns in which they live. In the United Kingdom, the government is trying to promote public transport as an alternative to car and air travel in order to reduce carbon emissions as well as to increase environmental sustainability and to reduce congestion on the roads.
