Snowed In.
It was February 13, 1985, and my new hubby of just three months was very busy getting ready to leave for work on the second shift. He was security police at the army depot near us, about 10 miles from our home. Today he was a bit anxious over the weather, the weather men were forecasting a blizzard heading our way, with high gust of winds and blinding snow. He would pace back and forth from the kitchen, where I was packing his supper, to the living room to listen to the latest weather report. He returned to the kitchen, saying, “honey it sure doesn’t sound good, maybe I’d better leave a little early. I finished packing his “dinner bucket” as we called it. I carefully wrapped some caramel brownies, fresh from the oven. These were to be a valentine surprise for him, as they were his very favorite brownie. It was a recipe from a cook book he had bought for me on our honeymoon as we visited Bellingrath Gardens. I had made the brownies several times in the short three months of our married life. I wanted our first valentine’s to be very special, so I tucked a card in with the brownies, and he was all set for work. We said our goodbyes, and I breathed a prayer of safety for him, as the snow was pouring and blowing so hard, I wondered how he could see to drive.
In the mean time I went into the living room to chat with my father-in-law. My husband’s mother was deceased, and he and his father lived together, we were having a new home built on the farm, and I just moved in with them, we would live with him until our home was finished. The phone rang interrupting our conversation, it was my oldest brother from my home town of about 35 miles away checking on our other brother, who was the carpenter building our home, he asked, did Darrell come to work today on the house? My answer was no, “ he didn’t come today, guess he’d heard the weather report”. My brother stated that he was just concerned about him, they were closing roads, and the interstate would be closed soon, his next question was did Larry Lynn (my hubby) go to work? He just left about five minutes ago, I answered. He voiced concern whether Larry would be able to make it to the depot. As I was engaged in the phone conversation, I was looking out the window at the snow that was looking more like a blizzard with each passing moment, and through the blinding snow, I saw head lights approaching the driveway.
