Americans have spent thousands of dollars on vacations in the past, but that is quickly coming to an end. Because of the current economic climate, most families today are wondering if there will even be the possibility of a vacation this year. Don't lose hope. There are a number of ways that you can save money on vacation, and still have a wonderful, relaxing time.
The way to save money on vacation is to start with the planning. Take a look at your finances, and determine how much you can afford to spend on a vacation. One of the best ways to save money is to vacation close to home. By cutting your gas expense, you will be able to save a considerable amount.
Motels and eating out are two of the greatest expenses on vacation. This year decide to do something different. Choose a state park near you and rent a cabin or camp out.
If you enjoy the outdoors, camping is the cheapest way to go. You can stay in a state park or rough it and camp in the national forest closest to you. If you like a little more comfort, a cabin is considerably cheaper than a motel room. You can save even more by purchasing your food ahead of time and preparing it yourself.
Plan simple meals that require very little preparation time. Let everyone help, and make it a time of family fun. Clean up as you go so there will not be much to do when the meal is finished.
Instead of visiting expensive theme parks or museums, look for activities close by that are free. Go hiking, swim at a lake or river, go bicycling or visit free museums in your area. Look online or check with your local chamber of commerce. You will be surprised to see what you can find to do that will not cost you anything.
State parks are a great place to vacation because there are all kinds of free activities that you can participate in. Check with the camp host to see what special programs are available. Most state parks have numerous activities for guests throughout the summer.
Take along some table games, a rope, soccer ball or volleyball. If you want to play with teams, just invite some of the other guests to join your game. Jumping rope is great exercise and loads of fun when you do it together as a family.
Another way to save money on vacation is to visit a family member or friends that you have not seen in a good while. You will not have to pay for motels or restaurant meals. Be sure to help out with the food expense so your visit will not be a burden on the other family.
Make it your goal to have the best vacation ever without spending a lot of money. Find ways to have fun that are inexpensive. Keep this in mind: Money is not what makes a vacation. It is the quality time you spend with your family.
