Will Iraq ever form a legitimate government?

A legitimate government in the form of a Democracy should be the question. Since Democracy seems to be the goal for the Iraqi people at this stage, I believe it is possible. But it will not be formed by anyone other than the Iraqis' themselves. Though the form of government they choose to adopt, may in the end, not be the one that takes power, it must be their decision and theirs' alone. A Democracy in an Islamic nation may sound to some as an absurdity, due to, of course, the stringent restrictions the Muslim faith has on it's followers. But then again, the ideals of the Puritan settlers of the Colonies back in the late 1600's were pretty strict as well, and yet, democracy still found it's way into the minds of the colonists'.

A Democratic government, historically, can only be born out of the minds of the people instituting the change. Freethinkers such as Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas Paine never claimed to have invented the political ideology known as Democracy....they were simply enlightened and educated men who saw an opportunity and took it. Incorporating age-old political beliefs dating back to the Roman and Greek Republic's, they merely adjusted the philosophy of such a government so as to be able to convince the people of the colonies' that such a politic body could, in fact, work. And that their separation from England would inspire other nations, seeking freedom, to actually consider Democracy a plausible solution for tyranny.

Iraq has been under the thumb of a dictator for so long that their desire for such cultural freedom and basic human rights is quite evident. But, in order for it to work, for their own personal freedoms to be won, they must be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice themselves. They may be free from their old dictator, but they are not free from their own people who are, themselves, vying for the seat of power at this moment.

Chaos has ensued in Iraq for several reasons....Shiites and Sunnis are constantly at odds with each other. Syria and Iran are pounding at the borders like rabid pit bulls just waiting for the opportunity to pounce into the backyard and bite the Iraqis' where it truly hurts. And the insurgents are 'ghost warriors' hell-bent on pushing Coalition Forces or any and all non-Iraqi out of the country.

Unlike Chess, there are no two sides of the board in this kind of turmoil. It is more like Chinese Checkers with several different opponents zeroing in on the prize.....ultimate control. Only the board, itself, has been tipped to the point where the marbles of the game are now strewn everywhere and the rules no longer apply.

If the Iraqi people are to have any hope in salvaging the remains of their country they need to start protecting themselves and stop relying on the protection of foreign invaders. If a government in such a country is to, not only be built, but survive.....they, as a people, need to come to terms with their own differences and resolve them.

But most importantly, nothing good can come out of this ordeal until the U.S. and other Coalition Forces leave the country. An occupied nation neither has the will or desire to do ANYTHING productive but fight when they are being occupied. If Iraq is to fall, it should be at their own hands. The same goes for if they are to rise and prosper. They are not children. They are human beings with minds of their own. Let them take care of themselves.
