Writing tips to help articles flow smoothly

by Carol Gioia

Created on: January 13, 2010

When the content of an article flows smoothly, with a sense of order, the experience for the reader is more enjoyable.

Ensuring ideas are conveyed in a concise and smooth-flowing manner is especially important when you are writing competitively, such as happens on Helium. If your article is well-written and becomes one of the highly rated, exposure to readers will be enhanced.

Writing tips to make articles flow smoothly:

- Consider your subject

When you have an idea for an article, ponder your reason for writing. Think about what point you are attempting to make, and how you will get the premise of your article across to the reader.

If you are writing to a specific title, ensure your content totally addresses the subject, giving the reader what he expects from the wording of the title.

- Make an outline

Write down your major points and number them in order of importance to the article.  Think about the introduction and conclusion. The introduction should lead up to the premise of your article and the conclusion should recap your ideas, leaving no questions unanswered in the reader’s mind.

- Begin to write

Write a rough draft of exactly what it is you want to convey, without editing in the process. Refer to your outlined notes to keep your thoughts in order and eliminate getting off-topic.  This method will ensure your thoughts flow smoothly. Taking the time to edit as you write often makes the finished article sound stilted or out of order.  Also, it is easy to wander off topic when you are concentrating more on accuracy than putting your thoughts to paper.

- Edit and revise

Once you have all of your thoughts expressed, make revisions or corrections as you deem appropriate. Be flexible and open to rearranging paragraphs in order to ensure your thoughts appear in orderly sequence to make the article flow smoothly from start to finish.

- Take time out

Let your finished piece sit for awhile and focus your attention elsewhere. When you revisit your finished article, read it aloud to yourself, or allow someone you trust to read it and give you honest feedback.

- Submit

If you are satisfied that the finished article is your best effort, submit it to your publisher, writing site, or whatever venue the article was specifically written to appear in.

By following these writing tips for making articles flow smoothly, you will discover that the more articles you write, the more adept you will become in formating smooth-flowing content with ease.
