Racial inequality is still very much alive in our country. But what about all the legislation we've passed for the rights of the minorities in our nation? The efforts of King? Chavez? Racial inequality may have been defeated on paper but not in ideology.
My theory is that the inequality, racism, mistreatment (choose your own title) exists by region. For example, here in the Rio Grande Valley, the population is easily over 90% Mexican-American. Here we treat white people poorly. We can't help but stare at black people. There are more blue moons than Asians. The point is that there hasn't been enough mixing of cultures and races in some parts of America and that has allowed certain parts of our country to remain "old-fashioned" in their ways of thinking.
That is not to say that these regions hate other races. It's just that we have not been privileged with the oppurtunity to really get to understand how it is they live, talk, and work. We don't know them and they don't know us. So, regardless of what laws you pass, geography has still been able to defeat the movement toward racial equality.
