Movie reviews: James Cameron's Avatar

Do you like Pocahontas? Do you enjoy painting with all the colors of the wind? Only in a crazy rendered 3d world created from the mind of James Cameron? Then perhaps Avatar is the movie for you!

Now don’t get me wrong, Avatar is a very interesting movie. I just don’t think I would have seen it in theatres if I knew what I know now that I’ve seen it. My biggest problem with it is the length of the movie. It’s around 3ish hours, give or take 15 minutes.

Now Avatar really does need to be that long in order to tell its story. Which leads me to my next problem with the movie; the story. Now, once again, don’t get me wrong it is a good story, I loved Pocahontas. When it came out. And I was in Elementary school. But nowadays it’s not quite what I look for in my movies.

The story is thus; a marines twin brother dies so he takes his place in this multi-trillion dollar project that creates avatars (Gasp, I bet that’s where the name comes from) of the indigenous species on the plant that this corporation is getting some sort of mineral out of. But the people are in the way. Hence the avatars. So the marine takes his brothers place and goes to the planet. Which he promptly gets his avatar lost on. So he hooks up with a female of the species which teaches him to paint with all the colors of the wind and dive off waterfalls. Well not really, but the gist is the same. So he becomes part of the tribe and the corporation decides to kill everyone, more or less. So he gets all of the people, which are called the Na’vi, by the way, to team up and try to kill the humans. After some truly amazing fight scenes they do. And the humans leave, except for a select group that are allowed to stay.

And that’s the movie in a nutshell. This would probably be a good point to mention that I have spoilers in my review.

So the long freaking movie looks AMAZING but it goes on for far too long. There were at least 3 different spots where I was sure the movie was going to end. Oh but how wrong I was!

Closing statement; Avatar is a really good and well made movie that should be consumed in multiple sittings (my personal belief). So my advice is to wait for it to come out on video before renting it.
