Although I am inspired by many other great people of our world, my meaning of life is not born because of a speech, paragraph, phrase, sentence, or word they might have uttered, regardless of the fact that it very well could have lit a fire under my rear end that day, or brought tears to my eyes. Yes, it's very good to enjoy every moment, love your family, contribute to the world, work as hard as possible, raise kids, make a difference, and to be a good person. I have no dispute with any of that, none at all. But the meaning of my life is to continue, each and every day, to grow as a person. When I say grow as a person, I mean make myself a kinder, gentler, more accepting, and better person overall.
If we set out each day with the self-betterment goal in mind, we have no choice but to make the world a better place. When you have the goal of personal improvement firmly entrenched in your psyche, you will make a difference. You will be a better parent and a better spouse. You will be a more charitable person and a more accepting person. You will come to grips with your own ego, realize your faults, and try to correct them. You will realize when you're wrong, apologize for it, and then try to correct your mistakes. When you set out each day with the goal of self-betterment echoing off the walls of your mind, you will shock people with kindness. You will amaze others with your sincerity and how genuine you are and in turn you will inspire them to amaze other people.
Instead of carrying stereotypes and hatred from one generation to another, we could all carry the singular goal of self-betterment. We see, stitched into our American fabric, racism and hatred towards one other people's skin tone, accent, hair, heritage, and ways of life. We see political boundaries drawn and then blood spilled over them, like the countless pieces of land fought over on our tiny rock in the middle of a vast and infinite universe. People are raised with self-defense, greed, money, self-preservation and power in mind-those are primitive traits-and now we have the minds to over-come those traits for an improved and advanced way of thinking. The famous are to be worshiped, noticed and praised instead of the people working themselves into exhaustion trying to make this world a better place; this certainly has to change.
Ladies and gentlemen, if self-improvement was the singular goal of our collective, human lives, we would, without even realizing it, make the world a better place. So please, try your hardest to live a life of self-improvement.
