Reflections: Reality

by Heidi Chambers

Who thought up fairy tales, Prince Charming, and happy endings?

I want to sue...

It's false advertising for those of us who believe that the man of our dreams exists and that there is such a thing as happily ever after.

It's a sham...

Women have grown up on fairy tales and have some idea of what they want to find in a man based on these stories.  The problem is, they will never find him because he doesn't exist.

Prince Charming wasn't even that great a catch because if you think about it, he was in three different fairy tales with three different princesses!  So how did they live happily ever after?  My fairy tale dreams are shattered by reality.  The prince couldn't even be monogamous.

Then you have the romance novelists who portray the tall, dark, and handsome stranger who whisks the woman off her feet..blah, blah, blah...

Fairy tales are the "honeymoon stage" of any relationship.  The birds are singing and helping with the laundry, the prince is dancing around with his new love, the sun is shining, and everything is great.  They don't show you a couple of years down the road when the prince is sitting on the couch watching football while the princess is cooking dinner and trying to shake a two year old off her leg.  She wants a hug and he wants a beer.  Aah...true love at it's finest.  The prince is now comfortable and doesn't have to show off for her anymore.  He can be "himself".  The self that is NOT the person she let into her heart.

It only takes one time to shatter any illusions you may have had about him.

Why would a man take all that time to reassure a woman that he is this great catch and would do anything in the world for her?  That he's interested in what she has to say, and cares about her opinions?  He reassures her that he's not like any of the other guys she's ever been with (OK, maybe his name!).  Why not just be himself to begin with?  Oh wait, because then he wouldn't get the girl...yep that's it!

Why do we buy into it?  We should all know better by now.  I don't know one woman who hasn't gone through this.  The bad thing is, we know it's going to happen!  Yet we let ourselves get wrapped up in the illusion and pretend it's going to be different this time and when the reality check bites us in the butt, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

But wait...

We can blame it on all the people who have filled our heads with fantasies, and Prince Charmings, and happily ever afters.

My head knows it won't happen but I can't convince my heart.

The reality is this...

If you've found Mr. Right, it's probably spelled with a W.
