Why a Christian should pray

by Cindy Whittington

Created on: January 12, 2010

I have been a Christian for approximately twenty-three years. I was saved as a young girl, and I am certain the best thing I have ever done in my life is accepting Jesus Christ as my personal savior. God is such an awesome and loving heavenly father and I know my life would not be complete without him. I believe the most important prayer an individual may pray is the prayer of repentance. After an individual truly believes Jesus was born of a virgin, shed his precious blood to cover the sins of the world, died for us, and rose again, their journey with Christ begins once they utter the words professing they are a sinner and asking remission for their sins. The Bible tells us in John 14:16: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.” Once we pray forgiveness from Jesus he will impart the father on our behalf that he might send the comforter or Holy Ghost to live in our hearts. What a blessing to know that Jesus accepts us, we just have to accept him. Therefore, the first and most important reason an individual should pray is to ask God to forgive his sinful nature and abide with him in his heart.

There are a plethora of reasons why a Christian should pray. In addition to praying the prayer of repentance, a Christian should want to pray to enhance their daily walk with Christ, to know Christ. We seek to fill our spiritual hunger for knowledge with the holy words from the Bible, but we must also seek to fulfill our knowledge of Christ in conversing with him. Christ yearns for us to build a close personal relationship with him. The Bible tells us to “pray without ceasing” in I Thessalonians 5:17. Christ wants us to know him on a personal level. To truly know God on a personal level we must pray and develop a friendship him. It is like any earthly friendship, we must talk and spend time with him. If you think about it, Christ makes is so easy for us to converse with him. He explains to us in his holy word how to pray. He even gives us examples of how to pray. All one has to do is read the Lord’s prayer as stated in Matthew 6:9-15. He also teaches us to pray for us in secret. In Matthew 6:6 Christ tells us to pray in your closet with the door shut. He says by praying in secret, he will reward us openly. He tell us not to pray using vain repetitions. Another way God makes it easy for us to pray is that he is an omnipotent God. He already knows everything about us including
