When most of us think of wedding cakes, we think of a three tiered cake in white icing with pillars and flowers. I had to write this article to get people to look into it and think outside of the box. I was I was really suprised by the range and variety of wedding cakes out there.
I went to look for my own wedding cake at the weekend.
I had looked into getting the supermarket wedding cakes for cheaper option. But a kind Grandma offered to buy us our wedding cakes and advised us that we were to have what we wanted and not ask how much it cost!
So she organised a meeting with a lady who had been recommended to her by someone else.
Anyway to cut a long story short and hopefully make less boring: We went to see this lady and she was most helpful, she explained her background and how long she had been making cakes (40 years). Then she showed us her magazines and her wedding portfolio. This had photographs of the wedding cakes she had made.
We were astounded to see the variety. She has cakes that were very traditional. White and cream iced cakes, on pillars and tiers, as you would expect. But we were looking for something different and modern...
Looking through her album we found:
• Castles
• Towers of suitcases
• The whole top table in cake and icing
• The Bride and Groom in the bath
• Under the sea scenes
• Wedding cars as cakes
• Whips and chains on cakes (?)
• A doctor and nurse on top of a cake, which little syringes and medical implements over the cake
• Gypsy wedding cakes, which involves a tier for every year of the bride's age
• Butterflies
• Bright-coloured wobbly cakes, etc.
Then there were the other options, she could make or cake in sponge, carrot, chocolate or fruit, and they also did cakes made from profriteroles, chocolate fingers, cheesecakes, etc.
I just wanted people to be aware of what there was out there to choose from. Then maybe you will not be as shocked as I was to see the variety when use visit a cake maker.
Hope this helps!
