Novel excerpts: Contemporary romance

by Constance Ruth Clark

Created on: January 11, 2010

Jane stared at the little pink stick in horror. Yup the results were definitely positive. Maybe it would change if she stared hard enough. This couldn’t be happening to her right now! She wasn’t even seeing anyone! Oh god, her mother was going to have a breakdown when she found out her oldest daughter was pregnant and not married. Or worse, she’d use this to practice dwelling on the positive, whatever that might be.

It wasn’t hard to figure out who the father was. That was if she were actually - no, she couldn’t even think it yet. Nick Graham was the only man she’d slept with in months and definitely the only candidate for her current dilemma. She sighed as she thought of him. He was six feet three inches tall, brown hair with sky blue eyes, hard body and he moved like a predator. She always felt kind of like a bunny being stalked by a mountain lion when he looked at her. Terrified, excited and on the verge of running for her life. That’s exactly what she’d done after the last time she’d seen him.

Sex with him had been everything her girlish fantasies could have dreamed up and more. He took his time with her, made sure she was completely satisfied before allowing himself to finish and even did the cuddle time afterwards without complaint! He really was too perfect. But every time she thought that, she remembered that for all his charm since high school, he couldn’t seem to keep his hands to himself. She could never live with a cheater.

And that’s what made her current predicament so upsetting. After having his girlfriend walk in on them after their night together there was no way she could let him back into her life. She’d finally decided she was done with Nick once and for all. She was moving on, except now she was staring at double pink lines that said she wasn’t.

“Charlie, get in here” she called.

Her roommate for almost 2 years, Charlie was your typical girlfriend. Never mind she was really a he, they still managed to gossip about guys, shop and do each others hair with the complete ease of longtime friendship. He appeared in the doorway of the bathroom now in his mint green bathrobe and purple silk pajamas.

      “What is it?” he asked.
