Encouraging children to help with the community

To help your community you have to start small. As a mother I have gone through different stages of growth and development that has enabled me to help my community in small ways. First, when my children were young I made it my business to involve my children in welcoming new neighbors to my community. My children and I would visit these families that were in close proximity. We welcomed them by bringing a simple item such as a fresh basket of strawberries from our garden, jars of homemade applesauce that the children had helped make, or a basket of fresh vegetables. We would include our phone number and name along with it. We helped shovel driveways in the winter. On snow days or snowstorms my husband and children would use the snowblower on our driveway and continue on to help our immediate neighbors who had not yet gotten cleared out. Through these many services and others we got to know our neighbors and they us and became friends and enlarged our circle. The best way to teach is by example. Now that my children are getting older I can see the fruits of our labor. I have noticed how our children are now well known in our community not only for their active participation, but for their kindness to others.
