So your dog had an accident? This is an unfortunate incident that has happened to almost every dog owner. Well what should be done about this? Don’t get mad or even angry. I shall tell you what I have found works for many others and myself. It only takes a little bit of time and energy.

Well, first things first you take an old towel and mop up as much as you can by applying firm pressure. This may take several minutes to complete. Do not wait till the spot is dry.  Spray the soiled area with clean water on it to flush as much of the residual residue as possible. Before putting anything on your carpet or upholstery, please do a spot check in a spot that is not noticeable incase of any discoloring.

Then use a mixture if detergent and water on the carpet of upholstery. Do not use anything with a bleaching agent as it may discolor the area. Scrub with firm downward pressure. Once you are sure you have completely cleaned the area than rinse with water once again by spraying the area with fresh clean possibly filtered water. I suggest filtering the water, so the any impurities in the water will not stain the fibers of the carpet or upholstery. 

Once these steps are completed then you can take a break. Wait till the area is completely dry. Make a solution of baking soda and filtered water. This solution should be rather thick almost the consistency of toothpaste. Put this on the soiled area and with a stiff brush scrub the baking soda solution as deep into the fibers as you can. Doing this will neutralize and eliminate whatever sent may still be there. Allow it to completely dry till it a power again through the entire area. Then vacuum the carpet or upholstery till there are no signs of the powder. Whatever smells might have potentially been there are now eliminated.

If you wish you could sprinkle unused baking soda over the rest of the carpet for a nice clean naturalized scent throughout the room. If you choose to do this step, then allow it to sit on the carpet for at least fifteen minutes than vacuum the entire carpet. Know one will ever know that your wonderful pup had an accident.

These tips also work for other stains and scents that get into the softer materials in the home and auto.
