They don't, in fact the scriptures relate very little to the institution marriage has become today. I have studied religions my entire life. Nowhere in the bible does it say you need government permission to marry. Unfortunately this is what it has become, a contract with the state more than a promise of love between two people.
According to the "good book" all you need do is "Pick one and stay with her" More interesting still prior to Medieval times there was no mention of marriage in the bible at all. Marriage was created in Medieval times to cement relations with other nations. Primarily England and France.
On the subject of divorce? This is not mentioned in the bible either. Ar least not originally. The Term divorce did not even exist when this book was allegedly written. Don't get me wrong here, I have nothing against religion whatsoever. I have my own opinions and beliefs on the subject. My only real problem with it is that to me it seems that no one has the same convictions even with in the same church. So many use only the parts and passages that support what ever justification they desire rather than the actual message.
There is also a passage that says if you no longer want "to be" with your woman, you simply wrote a letter releasing her from the bonds of love., or bondage depending on your view of the institution of marriage. We can't talk about marriage with out at least one marriage joke.
There is so much misinterpretation in and around the bible its baffling. At the time, most of this book appeared on earth the term :virgin simply meant young unwed woman, Not an actual physical virgin as we account for them today. If you are really interested in what the good book really said before it was rewritten, and it was rewritten quite a bit primarily in medieval times during the height of power in Catholicism, then you want to lean the ancient tongue of slaves... And read the ancient Judaic texts. A bible that is 1200 years old reads differently than one published 100 years ago. I need only point out the omission of the gospels of Judas and Mary Magdalen to illuminate that fact, both of which were found buried in a place whomever removed these two documents from the bible thought they'd never be found. I'm pretty sure they never imagined or counted on forensics either. Both gospels have been proven authentic.
I've no doubt this may light a fire storm. But before you grab a pitch fork and a torch, if you really want the truth one thing that they left in the bible when it was rewritten and reinterpreted many times is "If you want the truth, seek it for yourself".
No one can tell you the truth. The truth truly is some thing one must find on their own. Forget all you've been told, forget the warring that goes on even between religions based on the same edition of the good book. Research this for yourself, if it is the truth you truly seek, "seek and ye shall find".
I would never suggest that one not marry if that is your true desire, but the cold hard truth of it is all in the statistics. 70% of all marriages will end in divorce. It is in the bible that all one need do it "pick one and stay with her/him". According to biblical theologians and scholars, these were God's own words on the subject.
So to form a marriage bond in spiritual terms, all you need is loyalty and faith in each other. Something no ring or piece of paper can guarantee.
