Dave never learned to skateboard or even ride a bike. He knew nothing about hunting or fishing. He had no father to show him how; he didn’t have a dad for a role model. That was, at least, until one spring day when his mom met Joe. Joe showed up to fix the plumbing leak under the sink. He worked 2 hours until it was lunch time. Dave’s mother then asked Joe if he wanted a sandwich. He smiled and politely said “yes”, not that he usually ate at his customers’ homes but Tina was a pretty woman and he wanted to spend sometime getting to know her. From that day on they were inseparable.
Unlike any man who ever showed interest in Tina before, Joe didn’t ignore Dave. After Tina and Joe had been dating about 3 months he even starting spending time alone with Dave, taking him to baseball games and out for pizza. Dave felt like his life couldn't get any better. After dating a year, Joe and Tina wed. Joe stepped right in and filled the position that Dave's biological father never did. As years when by, Dave thought of him as his real dad and called him "dad".
One day, Dave, now 20 years old, was pulling in the driveway and noticed a strange car parked there. He never would have guess who the unexpected guest was. As he walked inside, he saw a face quite like his own, but much older. He knew from the first look it was his father, his biological father. He was standing in the middle of the living room looking nervous. Tina was on the couch with a stressed look on her face. She stood up and faced Dave, "David, this is your father, Jacob. He came to see you." Then Jacob said to Dave, "Hi son, how have you been?" Dave couldn't believe his eyes, or ears. He stood silent for a moment then he spoke with angry in his voice. "How have I been? You walked out when I was 2 and never bothered looking about for 18 years and now you just show up and ask how I've been? Well, I'll tell you how I've been, I 've great, just great. Fine without you. Why would you show up now?" Jacob began to reply, "Look son, I know you're angry and you have every right to be, but..." "You're right I do." Dave interrupted him. Just then Joe walked in. "Hey Dave", he said, "why don't we take a quick walk?", he said. Jacob looked puzzled but couldn't say anything as the two walked outside. After a few mintues, they returned. Dave walked in and hugged his mother then said, "I'm sorry for my anger. My parents taught me better than that and I should have been more respectful. If you are here for a second chance, I will give you that, but just once. But know that to me you are, and always will be, Jake, I already have a dad. That position is no longer available"
