Reflections: Nature

by Seldenia Harris

Created on: January 10, 2010

As I walk through the lush grass my feet rejoice in the softness that tickles my toes. I fall softly to the ground and gaze up into the immense sky. I am amazed at the beauty that Mother Nature offers. I imagine what it would be like to soar above the clouds with purpose and reckless abandon like the birds.

As I sit daydreaming I feel a grasshopper land on my arm. I sit very still hoping not to startle the curious looking creature. The grasshopper looks at me with its beady eyes contemplating its next move.  Once the grasshopper has determined that my presence is of no consequence it continues on its way.  As I lay there I feel lucky to be able to partake in the beauty that surrounds me.

I decide to leave my lush bed to take a walk in the woods. When I get up I see the indention that my body has left on the grass. I feel guilty for disturbing its lushness. When I enter the dark woods I feel a sense of foreboding. I carefully push away the branches of a willow tree. I breathe deeply of the woodsy odor and my heart beats faster with anticipation.

I’m amazed at the creatures that scamper under my feet. I carefully watch my steps as I venture further into the woods. I see the shells of nuts lying on the ground. I wonder if I follow their trail will I be led to the home a squirrel. As I continue on my journey a shadow catches the corner of my eye. I turn and see a doe prancing away. Her feet barely touch the ground as she hurries to her young.

The trees begin to rustle and shake. The sky grows darker and the animals begin to scamper into their hiding places. I feel frightened because I do not belong here. I am an intruder. I look for shelter but there is none. I stand beneath the bowing trees gripped with fear. I can't help but feel that my presence was not wanted. I run quickly hoping to find shelter before the storm hits. In front of me I see the familiar branches of the willow tree. I push through without thought. My earlier respect for its beauty has turned into fear. I escape into the open field unscathed. I turn to see the trees swaying back and forth angry that I had disturbed their sanctuary. I run into the house grateful for the protection that it offers. I realize that nature in all its glory can be unpredictable. I understand now that that I am a guest that has imposed on her gracious host.
