Is society addicted to cell phones?

by Raymond L. Marr

Created on: January 09, 2010

Cell Phones, they are amazing tools of this day and age, but has it gone to far? Have we become addicted to mobile phones? Addicted to always connected, with friends with family, yet should there not be a point where you can truly disconnect from the rest of the world? How many here actually turn their cell phones off when they actually sleep or just change the mode?

Sad to say there is a higher likelihood that you leave it on even when sleeping, on silent mode certainly, I say that because I know I do the exact same thing, to have my phone on for a quick check of the time or the one last thing I wanted to add to the calender.

To even ask seems to be a misnomer, as more and more people are like me, in wanting to be connected 24/7 just on the off chance they might miss one single thing, one moment that otherwise would not of been experienced or at least that is the thought, or excuse that can be used as to why your cell phone is always on, no matter what or where you are. Yet there is also other stories, different events and new approaches to stay connected but not to be addicted. That will be saved for a later article, for now the question is quite clear, Is Society addicted to Cell Phones?

With the world ever more connected, it almost seems like it has become a necessity, not only to follow the Joneses, but to keep in touch with people all around the world, to be able to have the information at your fingertips to find what you want right then and right there, to be able to navigate from point A to point D and still come back to B and C. using the innovative feature of the cell phones of today. Things like an integrated GPS, the interconnected webs just a few clicks away with it's abundance of information, ready all the time, all hours of the day, just as long as your signal is strong and your battery is not dead.

Following that thought perhaps cell phones have become an addiction out of necessity, to be able to have the information you need, the ability to communicate if there is a problem wherever you are. This is only a summarized list, but it seems to me not so much that cell phones are an addiction but instead they are a necessity in today's world. As they play a different role today, once they were seen as only a toy for affluent, who would of guessed they would of come this far in so many years. In part because of social media, the Iran Election 2009 provides an amazing example, of how people came together using tools like twitter in a 140 Characters
