Before getting anything published, you should definitely do all of the above. And this extends to getting your writing published on Helium. Pause and think about the topic about which you are going to write. Then learn and do some research before you start writing. Most of the time, it is impossible to not do a bit of research before you write anyway, unless it is an opinion piece that you are writing about. Then rethink your topic, as in the structure, how you're going to lay out your article in terms of ideas, concepts, etc.
Before you decide to click on the Write Now button on Helium, you should at first decide if you have some important information that you can write about the topic. If possible, this information should not be re-hashed information, meaning it should have a new twist, something that hasn't been discussed previously by other Helium writers. Although, having said this, I realise that there are a lot of information that can only be re-hashed, such as parenting topics. Then the way to approach this is to write your information in an interesting way, perhaps inject a personal experience into it and write it in a personable tone.
Helium is an excellent community whereby you can exchange knowledge and get new ones from others. So it is imperative that you don't plagiarise or mislead people by writing something on which you have no prior knowledge or have done no prior research on.
