Short stories: Winter romance

by Gail Isley

Created on: January 09, 2010

"Snow white, snow bright, bring me a boyfriend tonight" said Isabella as she stood by the window in her tiny one bedroom New York City apartment. From the window the petite 27 year old  Isabella constantly lost herself in daydreams of finding her perfect "Mr. Right" .  Sometimes he would be roaming around on the not so busy snowy streets ten stories below while at other times she imagined her "Mr. Right" rescuing her from some clumsy slip up on the icy front steps.  Bright and beautiful Isabella from her tiny window seal had dreamed up so many different romance scenarios that her life was turning into a fantasy fit for a king.

For the past couple of years she had watched her two younger over achieving sisters meet and marry handsome success bound men. Isabella had no doubt that someday her very own prince would come but in the mean time she was dealing with the hellish pressure of two very over bearing parents.  Her parents had their own fantasy's of seeing their oldest daughter follow in the footsteps of her younger sisters.  At every holiday gathering they would pound her with questions about her date life and overly inquire of the opportunity of meeting a possible suitor.

Christmas was coming in three short days. Isabella was dreading walking thru the doorway of her parents dowtown condo and having to yet again say, " No, I still haven't found anyone".  As she looked out her window into the dark snowy streets below, she all but decided to call off Christmas with her parents.  As she seriously pondered heading to the phone to do just that; her quirky door bell made its usual half a ringtone ding. With a big depressed and disgusted sigh she blew out the words, "Who in the world could be ringing this doorbell at 9pm?" As she rushed to the door she fumbled with her clothes to straighten them and ran her fingers thru her tangled hair.

With a bit of insecurity she peeked thru the door hole to see a young rather charming  man about the age of thirty standing on the other side.  She could see that he was holding a boquet of at least 2 dozen roses.  Isabella's heart began beating as a cats being chased by a dog. She thought of pinching herself to see if this was another fantasy, but no it wasn't , it couldn't be.  She cracked the door with the small chain lock still in place.  "Can I help you?" Isabella nervously asked.

"Um, Yes. My name is Jake and I hope i've reached the right apartment.
