Alexander Graham Bell is probably turning over in his grave. Yes, society, if addicted to cell phones. Cell phones, only a short time ago, were only for the privildeged in our society. Just think back to ten years ago, only a few had a cell phone. Cell phones evolved quicker than most modern inventions in our history.
Televisions, another invention that only a short time ago, was limited to one per household, took many years to become a big part of our society. Cell phones, on the other hand, since their debut, have crept into our lives faster than any of us ever experienced with a new type of technology. Computers, another example, took many years to become part of our everyday lives. To think that only about ten years ago, they were limited to only with people who lived among the rich and famous.
Cell phones are everywhere and are a technology that grew faster than any other modern technology in history. Cell phones are no longer even used for talking. Texting has become the norm. Everyone, everywhere needs to know every second what everyone is doing. Only a decade ago cell phones where meant to connect with people in emergency situations. A car breaking down, getting in touch with a loved one if they were at a hospital or in a crisis situation. Cell phones were a means to help you know and keep in touch with your children.
Today, in our society, cell phones are a must. We hear them in our sleep as they sound off with different types of ringtones. A ringtone for a call, a missed message, a text message. I knew that cell phones had become a part of society about two years ago. While in a restroom I was invaded by a cell phone from someone in the next stall of the Powder Room. I wondered to myself, what was so important that that call could not have waited. Was it a child in despair, a parent calling from a hospital bed letting their older child know they were on "deaths" bed. Much too my astonishment, I learned later it was the woman's spouse wanting to know if she could bring home a loaf of bread after she left the restaurant.
Yes, society is addicted to cell phones. Be careful what you wish for as who knows how just invasive cell phones will become.
