Why Christians should pray

Ask any good counselor to identify the most important element in a relationship, and his response will likely be; ‘communication.’ If communication is not number one on his list, it will rank right up there. Without communication the relationship is nominal at best. A relationship, in which one party continually attempts to connect with the other person and is ignored, is just as disconcerting; perhaps more.  A friendship which exists without communication is a mirage. It is a shadow of what could be. It is unfulfilling and significantly ineffective. How sad. Immensely more depressing, is the lack of communication between a Christian and his/her Lord. The blame can only be laid one place; at the feet of the nominal Christian.

The husband who finds himself in a one sided relationship, faithfully attempting to connect with his wife, is a picture of God. God walked in the cool of the evening with Adam and Eve.  When the first couple blew it in the garden. breaking fellowship with Him, God set in motion a series of events which would lead to the reconciliation of communication between God and man. He did this through His Son Jesus. The cost of communication was great; the very life blood of Christ Jesus, through His sacrificial death on the cross. We were linked back to God by His resurrection. Jesus opened the lines of communication between God and man. If the fact, that the God of the universe desires to have fellowship with us, does not drive us to pray then the very notion of what it cost Jesus to make it happen should compel us.

You’ve probably heard it said that, ‘prayer is hard work.’ While there may be some truth to that statement this writer asserts; 'prayer is easy'. Maybe more Christians would spend time in prayer if they recognized how simple it is to pray. Even the statement ‘spend time in prayer’, sounds ominous. The definition of prayer is simple. Prayer is talking to God. Talking is easy. Most of us have been talking since   nearly forever. We talk to our spouses (hopefully), our children, and strangers. We communicate what we see, feel, desire, and what frustrates us and makes us mad. We ask questions. Prayer is communicating the same things to God. The only distinction is He can make a difference in the course of our experiences.
