Why Christians should pray

Christians pray because prayer facilitates change.  The Bible teaches that the “effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16b, KJV).  If prayer works, why not pray?  Prayer is essential in the life of Christians, who pray to receive wisdom and help in time of need for themselves and others.  Most importantly, prayer is used to fellowship with God.

What is prayer?

Prayer is the means used to communicate with God.  Prayers are made to God and God answers.  His response may come through the testimony or preaching of others.  The answer sought may be revealed in His Word or be communicated through the Holy Spirit

Christians have access to God through Jesus Christ the Son.  In times past, before Jesus was born and crucified, Hebrew priests made intercession to God on behalf of the people.  Today, Jesus as God’s Son has the authority to act as intercessor and priest.  Individuals can appeal directly to God by praying in the name of Jesus who brings our petitions before God.  Since there is now no need for a human priest to intercede, prayers can be lifted up whenever needed.

There are times when we realize we do not know how to pray.  The Book of Romans in chapter 8 verses 26-27 tells us that “…the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities:  for we know not what we should pray for as we ought:  but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”  God loves us so much that He has even made provision for us to pray effectively.  For those who fear that their prayers are too inexperienced or feeble, rest assured that your prayers will be heard and answered.

We no longer need fear that our prayers will fall on deaf ears.  The Bible teaches “the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers” (1 Peter3:12a).  When someone prays, it is an acknowledgment that God’s intervention in the affairs of mankind is needed and desired.

Jesus said in the Book of Matthew, “whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive” (21:22).  This verse assures God’s intervention according to His will.   The word “believing” in this verse implies believing in God and trusting Him.
