Management development is an effort (effectively planned) that will enhance both the learner’s (hopeful manager) capacity and capabilities to manage an organization and quite possibly themselves. The most frequently cited skills of effective managers are: effective and concise communication; problem definition, identification, solving; and influencing and ultimately motivating others. Much of these aforementioned skills can be taught through training and development programs. Management development envelops the idea of training, in order for management development to occur there needs to be some sort of training in place, often offered by the company they are employed by.
What is the importance of Management Development? It is good for the company they represent and the employees who work under the manger respectively. For companies to have techniques and provide them to their managers for management development, helps the company to retain their valued employees and helps them to service their clients better.

Formal development programs
This is often the most added element in any leadership development strategy. A formal program often consists of a classroom lecture or seminar which covers the corporate theories and principles pertaining to leadership. There are some 80-90% of companies, using classroom delivery as their most frequent avenue to engage their manager’s development. This becomes an especially important program, when the company’s top leaders participate or make special talks within the seminar about such things as, how they made it to the top? The workshops emphasize both positive and negative feedback and how to properly receive both. These often last several days, (3-5 typically) and tend to be delivered at an off-site location. Often the cost of developing a one week off-site leadership development program can be $75,000 to $240,000, not including delivery costs which can cost an extra $20,000-$100,000. Given the expense of a tailored development program, many organizations are encouraging their top leaders to enter executive education programs at a major university or college.
