Guide to the different golf clubs

by Jessica A. Tucker

Created on: January 07, 2010

In 2010, there are so many choices of golf clubs to consider when building your perfect set of clubs.  Depending on whom you ask, the perfect clubs to include may differ from golfer to golfer.   Most importantly and by regulations of the game in most areas, a full set of golf clubs cannot include more than fourteen clubs including a putter and driver.  Generally, a full set of clubs will include a driver, woods, irons, wedges and a putter.

The Driver.

Commonly associated with Happy Gilmore and John Daly, the driver tends to be a popular favorite of every golfer.  With a ‘grip it and rip it’ mentality that is hard to resist, almost every golfer loves standing up on the tee box to try and hit a smoking tee shot.

The driver has heavily evolved in the last hundred years of golf.  Originally, the driver was actually a small ‘one iron’ that would have been relatively impossible for the average golfer of today to hit.  From this unforgiving club, the idea of our present style of driver was born which turned it into a large headed club notable longer than the rest, making it easier to reach long distances.  From there, technology has taken over and the average distance of a drive has gone from a couple hundred yards to three or four hundred with the invention of the four hundred cc. drivers.

Woods.

No, not the bush, although fairway woods are an excellent choice for relief from densely grassed areas.  The fairway wood looks very similar to the driver only with a smaller head and is usually labeled as a three, five, seven or nine wood.  The fairway wood in commonly used to gap the long distance often found on long holes between driver and irons.  As the driver seemed to inspire the creation of the fairway wood, the fairway wood now seems to have spun the creation of new hybrid irons that are a rising trend among golfers all over the world.

Irons.

Nine irons are usually found in a set of golf clubs, this would provide the golfer with a sand wedge, a pitching wedge, a nine, eight, seven, six, five and four iron.  Some golfers also choose to include gap wedges, two or three irons, or even the infamous one iron in their bag.  With all the new technologies today, golfers can now purchase entire sets of the hybrid irons that are found to be easier to hit by many and make playing the game much more comfortable for some.

The putter.

The putter is one of the most important members of the golf bag.  Without a putter that works well for the individual golfer, the game of golf can be a frustrating experience.   The smallest of clubs in the bag, many different styles of putters are available to the golfer in 2010 and time should be spent finding the proper one.

Once you can collect the perfect combination of fourteen clubs for your golf bag and feel comfortable working with each of them, you are sure to see a side of the golf course and the scorecard you may never have seen before.
