TORTAS on 7th & Main
Illuminating the corner of the gateway to the entrance of Downtown’s Fashion District stands a refreshing little Mexican Diner open 24 hours that is a blessing for all; especially those who aren’t quite able to stumble all the way home after the nightclub closes or need some nourishment before attempting to drive home drunk.
With 42 laminated images of deliciously displayed numbered meals plastered along the grease-soaked walls loving prepared by the two older men behind the counter, 12 comfy bar stools lining the other side, glass windows openly inviting the empty streets, and 75 cent coffee, it is a wonder how the Zagat Guide missed this find. Of course there was no poppy music, there was no Mexican music, and the owners weren’t much for conversation. Everyone pretty much keep to themselves enjoying their meals, drinking their coffee, and contemplating in the silence.
I sat for a few then ordered a cup of coffee. Not the best joe I’d ever forced past my tongue, but at 5am, it hit every spot.
My eyes watched in a glaze as the woman-like figure at the end of the row of sporadically occupied red-leather seats engaged in an argument with herself. Looking obviously mesmerized and not much like a native to the area, I stood out. The man sipping his warm caffeinated beverage two seats away from me voiced his wonder as to why I was there. I told him I passed out at the night club, lost my friends and walked towards the light. He told me he lived a few blocks way and often came to Tortas to think and drink cup after cup of the best fresh-brewed coffee available at that hour.
Hunger crept in and I had a decision to make: Tacos, burritos, a quesadilla, or a burger and fries?
The double set of lavishly garnished tacos slowly being consumed by the man to the other side of me seemed to be the most delicious tacos outside Tijuana. I love a good taco. But I knew I would never forgive myself in the late morning if I ordered anything other than menu item #5: the breakfast sandwich (minus the pig meat).
Everyone always says food tastes better when you’re drunk. Always is a strong commitment, but that was without a doubt the best egg and cheese sandwich I’ve ever had. Or was it a torta?
Either way, I will have to return for those tacos!
