Many people take whirlwind tours of Europe, stopping only in the major capitals. While these cities offer more concentrated doses of culture and excitement, you can't really see Europe if you never get away from them. It would be foolish, however, to spurn them entirely. So here's a mix of big and small: ten of the most interesting or pleasant places in Europe.
1. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Germany
The Rhine flows for hundred of miles, but the most romantic section is from Koblenz to Ruedesheim, where dozens of castles perch on green slopes surrounded by vineyards. Of the picturesque half-timbered villages along the way, St. Goar, Oberwesel, and Bacharach are the best situated. Bike between St. Goar and Bacharach, especially in late summer, when you can pick blackberries as you pedal along the river. Don't miss the boat trip from Bacharach to Ruedesheim. Hike in the hills, swim in the river, or eat ice cream in the waterfront parks while you watch the gargantuan barges and sleek river cruise ships float peacefully past.
2. Aeroskobing, Denmark.
Aero is a Danish island, the type of place where the churches' chandeliers are actually sailing boats, the most interesting museum is a ship in a bottle exhibition, and the only way to get in or out is by ferry. The chief town on the island is Aeroskobing: colorful, cobbled, quiet. A bike trip is a must. Rick Steves gives a great itinerary that takes you past fields, dramatic cliffy beaches, and peaceful villages. Aero is one of those faith-in-the-human-race-affirming places where people leave garden goods outside their houses on little stands: fresh strawberries, potatoes, honey. You simply leave your money in the box or the jar and take what you paid for. All on the honor system. If you want a buzzing nightlife, this isn't the place for you, but if you want a few days of relaxation and fresh air, don't pass it up.
3. Rome, Italy
It's a big, big city, with the noise and the speed and the technology of modern life making a strange contrast to the ancient monuments you studied in grade school. The Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum are all fascinating, as long as you know a little history or join a good tour. Visit the Vatican, a whole little world in itself, and St. Peter's, a cathedral built in part from the marble they ripped off the Colosseum. If you want to see the Sistine Chapel, be warned that they parade you through the whole museum before you get there. Slow down and enjoy this parade. There's time
